General Information

Rome is the capital city and most populated comune (municipality) of Italy. It is also the administrative centre of the Lazio region and of the Metropolitan City of Rome. A special comune named Roma Capitale with a population of 2.7 million in an area of 1,287.36 km2 (497.1 mi2), Rome is the third most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. The Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, with a population of 4.2 million, is the most populous metropolitan city in Italy. Its metropolitan area is the third-most populous within Italy. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber Valley. Vatican City is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city. Rome is often referred to as the "City of Seven Hills" due to its geography, and also as the "Eternal City". Rome is generally considered to be one of the cradles of Western civilization and Western Christian culture, and the centre of the Catholic Church.

Tensioni tra diverse centinaia di giovani e forze dell’ordine questa mattina nei pressi di Sciences Po Paris, tra gli atenei più prestigiosi di Francia. Le forze dell’ordine hanno fatto uso di gas lacrimogeni, con l’intento di sgomberare i giovani che avevano eretto una barricata di cassonetti sul boulevard Saint-Germain, tra i viali più eleganti e frequentati della capitale. Secondo l’agenzia France Presse, mentre i manifestanti iniziavano a intonare La Marsigliese, diversi studenti hanno formato una catena umana a pochi centimetri dagli scudi dei gendarmi, in un’atmosfera tesissima. Secondo Thomas Portes, deputato della France Insoumise (Lfi), presente alla mobilitazione davanti a Sciences Po dalle 9 del mattino, “si è passati da una mobilitazione pacifica e tranquilla a un intervento sproporzionato della polizia, con cariche, uso di scudi e gas lacrimogeni”, ha dichiarato a BfmTv. “Credo che queste persone non si rendano conto del livello di repressione che esercitano su giovani che chiedono semplicemente di avere insegnanti, carta igienica e la possibilità di studiare in modo dignitoso”, ha aggiunto. Alla domanda sui motivi della sua presenza, il deputato Insoumis ha detto di essere voluto andare anche per “svolgere un ruolo di protezione, per così dire. È importante che ci siano rappresentanti eletti della Repubblica a dire a poliziotti e gendarmi: ‘Possiamo comprendere la necessità di uno sgombero, ma questo deve avvenire con calma’. Qui invece abbiamo persone colpite da gas lacrimogeni a distanza ravvicinata e giovani scaraventati a terra; è inaccettabile, dato che la situazione era assolutamente pacifica”. “L’atmosfera – conferma uno studente dell’ateneo citato dall’Afp – era molto pacifica. Ma poi è arrivata la polizia e ha iniziato a usare gas lacrimogeni e manganelli”. Braccianti sfruttati nel Casertano, fino a 14 ore al giorno per 80 centesimi a cassetta: 8 indagati
Fino a 14 ore di lavoro al giorno, sette giorni su sette, sotto il caldo e sotto la pioggia. Pagati tra 80 centesimi e un euro e mezzo a cassetta, oppure tra 3 e 4 euro all’ora, o ancora con una paga giornaliera di 30 euro per i nuovi lavoratori e di 50 per quelli impiegati da più tempo. È il quadro emerso da un’indagine durata oltre due anni tra Villa Literno e Mondragone, nel Casertano, sullo sfruttamento di lavoratori extracomunitari privi del permesso di soggiorno. L’inchiesta, coordinata dalla Procura di Santa Maria Capua Vetere e condotta dai carabinieri del Nucleo ispettorato del Lavoro di Caserta, ha portato oggi a diversi provvedimenti. Per tre persone, tutte domiciliate in provincia di Caserta, è stata disposta la presentazione alla polizia giudiziaria; per un’altra è scattato l’obbligo di dimora. Ad altre quattro persone sono stati notificati gli avvisi di conclusione delle indagini. In totale sono 8 gli indagati. I destinatari dei provvedimenti sono accusati di intermediazione illecita e sfruttamento del lavoro per aver reclutato e impiegato manodopera clandestina. Secondo quanto emerso dalle indagini, i braccianti, fino a 80 al giorno, venivano reclutati in strada e trasportati sui luoghi di lavoro a bordo di furgoni fatiscenti, anche adibiti al trasporto merci. I lavoratori, sempre secondo l’inchiesta, operavano senza visita medica, senza bagni chimici e senza punti di ristoro. Non potevano assentarsi per malattia né comunicare al telefono ed erano sottoposti al controllo continuo dei cosiddetti caporali. Avrebbero rischiato di perdere il lavoro se fossero scappati durante i controlli delle forze dell’ordine, in caso di scarsa resa lavorativa o per malattia. Le indagini sono state condotte attraverso pedinamenti e attività tecniche e si sono protratte per oltre due anni. I braccianti che hanno fornito dichiarazioni ritenute utili agli investigatori sono stati collocati in località protette e hanno ricevuto una prospettiva di protezione e inserimento socio-lavorativo. “I fatti emersi nell’indagine sul caporalato nei terreni agricoli del Casertano sono gravi perché il reclutamento dei lavoratori avveniva sulla strada pubblica, alla luce del sole, nell’indifferenza di tante persone, che non hanno mai denunciato, anche perché probabilmente assuefatte a tali fenomeni. E l’aspetto positivo è che invece 17 braccianti hanno collaborato nell’inchiesta, trovando il coraggio di denunciare i propri sfruttatori” spiega il procuratore di Santa Maria Capua Vetere Pierpaolo Bruni nel corso della conferenza stampa convocata negli uffici della Procura, alla presenza del procuratore aggiunto Graziella Arlomede che ha sottolineato “l’assiduità delle condotte”, che dimostrano “la consapevolezza tanto delle persone sfruttate, che sapevano di trovare lavoro, che dei caporali e degli imprenditori ad aggirare le regole”. Dalle indagini (a coordinarle il sostituto Armando Bosso) è emerso che i lavoratori venivano reclutati ad una delle rotonde stradali di Villa Literno, tutte le mattine, e spesso anche in vicoletti; poi da lì venivano smistati nelle campagne del posto, o anche a Casal di Principe, Grazzanise, con i furgoni omologati per nove persone ma in cui venivano stipati 25-30 lavoratori, e spesso i mezzi erano per le merci e non avevano finestrini. Il coraggio di uno dei lavoratori, che per primo ha denunciato i caporali, ha dato l’avvio alle indagini, poi si sono poi aggiunti anche gli altri lavoratori che hanno permesso agli inquirenti di ricostruire il sistema illecito tramite appostamenti e video. Sulla vicenda sono intervenuti anche esponenti del Partito democratico. Antonella Forattini, capogruppo Pd in Commissione Agricoltura della Camera, ha definito gravissime le condizioni emerse dall’inchiesta, sottolineando il ruolo delle forze dell’ordine e il coraggio dei lavoratori che hanno parlato. Ha richiamato inoltre la legge sul caporalato del 2016 e la necessità di rafforzare controlli e strumenti di protezione e inclusione per chi denuncia, sostenendo che il lavoro agricolo debba essere regolare, dignitoso e sicuro. Sandro Ruotolo, componente della segreteria nazionale del Pd ed europarlamentare, ha invece collegato quanto emerso oggi alla storia dello sfruttamento dei braccianti nel Casertano, ricordando la vicenda di Jerry Masslo, ucciso nel 1989 a Villa Literno. Ruotolo ha sostenuto che per contrastare il fenomeno sia necessario risalire l’intera filiera, dagli intermediari alle imprese e ai committenti, rafforzando i controlli e consentendo ai lavoratori di denunciare senza il ricatto della clandestinità. Ha inoltre sottolineato che lo sfruttamento, a suo giudizio, non riguarda soltanto l’economia illegale, ma può intrecciarsi anche con quella legale quando il profitto prevale sulla dignità dei lavoratori.
